During the first few years of Abaddon’s conquest, the Inquisition understood the threat he faced to the stability of the Empire and dispatched an elite division whose sole purpose was to eliminate his threat by any means possible. A conglomerate of 5 Inquisitors led this division, and were given any resources they requested to complete their task. Hundreds of specially-selected troops were chosen for a total of ten taskforces to chase Abaddon and the high-rankers in his revolution across the entire width of the galaxy and more, and as far as the bureaucracy is concerned, it is still continuing. However, only three taskforces remain today, led by a single shadowy Inquisitor. The others have all simply fallen away to redundancy as Abaddon refuses to be found, time and time again disappearing after starving yet another world of its resources and leaving it to be eaten by Chaos. All the others, that is, except Taskforce 9.
Around half a century after the commencement of this wild-goose-chase, the starcruiser Blackbird carrying TF9 encountered a small convoy of around 5 light transports off the desert planet of Toplis IV. At that time, the taskforce consisted of Inquisitor Dvorak, and under him 50 of the hardest men of their ranks in the galaxy, a representation of each of the largest Space Marine chapters: the Ultramarines, Salamanders, Raven Guard, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and so forth, ranging from heavily-armed Terminators to lightning-fast assault troops, as well as long-range snipers and heavy weapons squads. In fact, such was the diversity and experience of the men that this small force could easily have taken on a far larger adversary, some estimate even an opposition numbering well over 2 000 troops.
The convoy remained unidentified, and so the Blackbird moved in closer as to ascertain whether they were friend or foe. When about 300 000 miles apart, the convoy suddenly began to descend onto the planet’s yellow surface. Dvorak immediately ordered the Blackbird into pursuit, for fear that a Chaos quarry might escape them.
